UK-based African independent power developer, owner and operator group Globeleq announced on Monday that it has appointed Edouard Wenseleers as chief development officer. His appointment has been made effective from August 10. He originally joined the company in 2018 and was most recently its MD Business Development and Head of East Africa.

“Edouard’s appointment reflects both his significant contribution to Globeleq over the past eight years and the depth of leadership talent within our organisation,” explained Globeleq CEO Jonathan Hoffman. “He has consistently demonstrated the ability to originate, develop and deliver complex projects in some of Africa’s most dynamic markets. As we continue to expand our development portfolio and pursue new opportunities, I believe Edouard is the right leader to get the most out of our team and deliver value for our business and the communities we serve.”

In his previous position, he also had overall responsibility for the management of the company’s assets and operations in Kenya. In that country, he played a central role in the financial close and construction of the 52 MW Malindi solar power project and was the leader in the financial closing of the 35 MW Menengai geothermal project. He also oversaw the acquisition of the 51% share in the Lunsemfwa Hydro Power Company, in Zambia, that was held by Norwegian development finance agency Norfund. This was one of the strategic growth and acquisition projects that he oversaw, across East Africa and Zambia.

Globeleq is a joint venture between Norfund and UK development finance agency British International Investment. Staring in 2002, Globeleq has developed a diversified portfolio of 17 independent power plants across seven African countries. These power plants have a total generating capacity of 1 660 MW. Another 665 MW are being built and a further 2 000+ MW are under development.
